Most developers and designers I know are all wrestling with the same obstacle: we do not have the “free time” to devote to our own websites. It’s just low on the priority of “Things that I Must Do” list, along with watching most of the movies that have come out into the past five years. Or pretty much any streaming show. (I have my select few…but I can’t juggle more than two at a time.) So, it was a rare random day several weeks ago in which I had decided to give some TLC to my personal website that I hadn’t touched since the pandemic had started. I had built the old site on Craft CMS, and apparently let it slip into a state of “really needing software updates ASAP”. Unfortunately, when I attempted to update anything, I would get a warning message that I had to update a dependency and after about the fifth time of doing this, I had the brilliant idea of just nuking the site from orbit, to be safe. Silly me thought I could just reinstall it the same night (or a week later as the case may have been) but unfortunately I had forgotten all the hacks I had done to get Craft CMS installed on my server to begin with and once I did remember, I had zero motivation to deal with twig and templates and whatever. But what I can do in my sleep? Install WordPress and build my own theme. So that’s what I did.
