The problem is finding the inspiration. My first go was easy. I have a content calendar for another site I publish on, [October ](https://octobercurio.com/)[Curio](https://octobercurio.com/), and I need a place for it to live in private, so I connected my Claude with it and published it up. Then I got to thinking: if I could create anything to amuse myself, what would it be? The first thing that immediately came to mind was a collection of tiny Matt Berningers, cause why not? I used ChatGPT, aka Chatty G, to help me create the tiny Matts and soon [Tiny Matt](https://tiny-matt.view.fast/) was live. It is glorious. You refresh the page and you get a new tiny Matt. I’ve started creating them based on song lyrics so this project could keep me busy for a while. The next idea I had is something I would like to actually do at some point using real illustration, not AI, but I wanted to see a sort of working prototype – [Otter Tarot](https://otter-tarot.view.fast/). It does a daily card and it pretty simple with the art work- same art work on every card, just with a title overlayed when it renders. It’s cute. Spacefast seems to be a good platform to get those random 2am ideas up and published. I’m sure I’ll get more unhinged at times depending on what I determine to be a good idea. Definitely check it out though. --- # The time I lost a snake, but not really URL: https://justinemeyer.com/the-time-i-lost-a-snake-but-not-really/ --- title: "The time I lost a snake, but not really" date: 2026-09-22 modified: 2026-09-22 author: "justine" url: "https://justinemeyer.com/the-time-i-lost-a-snake-but-not-really/" markdown_url: "https://justinemeyer.com/the-time-i-lost-a-snake-but-not-really.md" type: post excerpt: "I guess I'm a snake person now. Who knew?" categories: - "Life" --- My youngest son recently had his birthday and all he asked for was a corn snake. This has been an ongoing theme with him; every birthday he asks for a new pet. Sometimes it doesn’t even need to be his birthday. Earlier this year he begged for a kitten (I was considering adopting one anyway) with the promise of “if you get me a kitten, I won’t ask for a python.” I was sold. The kid loves animals. A lot. So this year, again, his request was for a corn snake. I figured a corn snake is a relatively easy ask. I wasn’t enamored with the idea of feeding mice to a snake, but circle of life and all that. I did a lot of research and bought the enclosure and all the accoutrements needed for a snake. We decided to go to a [local reptile expo](https://www.cincityreptileshow.com/) to acquire said snake and found one the day before that he really liked. If you’re into the morph speak, this snake is a coral ghost sun-kissed corn snake. Absolutely beautiful. And tiny. I was not prepared for how tiny the snake was. It made his enclosure look like a mansion. We got the snake and got him settled into his enclosure and gave him some time to decompress. Then about on day 3 of owning a snake, I hear “mom, I can’t find the snake.” I went into my son’s room and checked the enclosure; sure enough, I was not finding a snake in there. The next day, I began checking the obvious spots a baby corn snake would run and hide to, with no luck. I checked the enclosure, again, every square inch. Nothing. A week went by with no sign of the snake. I decided last night to see if I could lure him out with a heating pad. I got the heating pad in position and set it on the lowest setting. Then I thought I should place one of his hides on the heating pad as I’m sure he’d not want to be in the wide open space. I lifted the hide up, and there was Noodle the snake. Sitting in the enclosure like he’s been there the entire time. The enclosure I had searched multiple times. I have no idea where he was hiding but I knew he was going to be hungry so we fed him and left him alone to enjoy his meal. I’m interested to see if he does this on the regular. The enclosure is pretty secure so I was surprised that he was “missing” to begin with. Owning a pet snake is going to be an adventure. --- # The Whole Hive URL: https://justinemeyer.com/archive/ --- title: "The Whole Hive" date: 2026-09-08 modified: 2026-09-07 author: "justine" url: "https://justinemeyer.com/archive/" markdown_url: "https://justinemeyer.com/archive.md" type: page excerpt: "Everything I’ve written, sorted into cells. I didn’t blow anything up this time, but instead decided to fracture what this domain is for and move the portfolio stuff to a new umbrella, Mockingbird Studio. Once the idea came to me, it was go go go. I finally got the site launched while sitting in [Broadway Cafe in Chicago](https://broadwaycafechicago.com/) on a Friday night. Unrelated, if you happen to be in Chicago, I 100% recommend their Chicago-style brownie. I didn’t even know there was a Chicago-style brownie. Unrelated unrelated – the actual Broadway Cafe looks nothing like the photos on that site, so I managed to walk right past it while looking for it. I kept Mockingbird on WordPress because I’m comfortable developing in WordPress and it really fits my needs. I used patterns and templates and not so much in custom blocks this time. There was a learning curve but I got it deployed pretty quickly. Then I had to move over my projects which I did manually because, why not. Made a few tweaks here and there but it’s up. This site will become my personal blog and I may eventually add a blog to Mockingbird but I’m not in a rush for that just yet. --- # A new start URL: https://justinemeyer.com/a-new-start/ --- title: "A new start" date: 2023-06-03 modified: 2026-09-08 author: "justine" url: "https://justinemeyer.com/a-new-start/" markdown_url: "https://justinemeyer.com/a-new-start.md" type: post excerpt: "Most developers and designers I know are all wrestling with the same obstacle: we do not have the “free time” to devote to our own websites. It’s just low on the priority of “Things that I Must Do” list, along with watching most of the movies that have come out into the past five years. Or pretty much any streaming show. (I have my select few…but I can’t juggle more than two at a time.) So, it was a rare random day several weeks ago in which I had decided to give some TLC to my personal website that I hadn’t touched since the pandemic had started. I had built the old site on Craft CMS, and apparently let it slip into a state of “really needing software updates ASAP”. Unfortunately, when I attempted to update anything, I would get a warning message that I had to update a dependency and after about the fifth time of doing this, I had the brilliant idea of just nuking the site from orbit, to be safe. Silly me thought I could just reinstall it the same night (or a week later as the case may have been) but unfortunately I had forgotten all the hacks I had done to get Craft CMS installed on my server to begin with and once I **did** remember, I had zero motivation to deal with twig and templates and whatever. But what I can do in my sleep? Install WordPress and build my own theme. So that’s what I did.
